ENDANGERED & THREATENED PLANTS OF BANGLADESH
A plant which is found exclusively in a particular geographical region are known as endemic
plant of that particular region.
Endemic plants of Bangladesh
To evaluate endemism within the political boundary of Bangladesh, one may need to have a clear
idea on the geographical position as the south eastern part of Bangladesh lies in the Indo-Burma
biodiversity hotspot while the central and north-west parts lie in the upper gangetic plain. Hence
there is a large variety of angiosperms and avifauna within the land surface of Bangladesh
though endemism is relatively low for the country.The number of angiosperm plants of
Bangladesh is about 5000 (Khan, 1972).Ahmed et al. (2007-2010) recorded 3,611 plant
species under 199 families in the recently published Encyclopedia of Flora and Fauna of
Bangladesh.The estimation of the endemic plants of Bangladesh is highly required for the
determination of current status and conservation management strategies for sustainability of the
environment.
Endangered plants
Any endemic plant species that may face extinction in near future due to rapid decrease in its
population is known as endangered plant.
Threatened plants
Any plant that has the possibility of becoming endangered in foreseeable future is recognized as
threatened plants.
